  • Be a veteran eligible for treatment in the Veterans Administration Healthcare System
  • Be able to produce some gripping motion in at least one hand
  • Have at least some light touch and pin prick sensation awareness in the C6, C7, and C8 dermatomes of the hand
  • Have MRI evidence of cervical spinal cord injury at or above the C8 level
  • NOT have uncontrolled medical problems including pulmonary, cardiovascular or orthopedic disease
  • NOT have an implanted pacemaker
  • NOT have a history of head injury or stroke
  • NOT have a history of seizures or drug treatment with medicines that lower seizure threshold

  • Be able to activate the muscles of the upper arm and forearm with enough strength as determined by the therapist.
  • Have full passive range of motion of elbow, as determined by study staff
  • NOT have excessive spasticity in elbow or wrist jointsas determined by study staff
  • NOT have a history of neurologic disorder other than spinal spinal cord injury
  • NOT have severe psychiatric problems
  • NOT have a history of epilepsy, seizure, or convulsion
