  • AIS A, B, C, D
  • ≤ 80 years
  • have a cervical degenerative myelopathy (spinal cord compression with neurological impairment because of degenerative disease of the cervical spine)
  • have a preoperative modified Japanese Orthopedic Association (mJOA) score ≥8 and ≤14 (consistent with moderate to severe neurological impairment)
  • not have had previous surgical decompression of the cervical spine

  • Age 18 - 65 yrs

  • ≤ 36 months
  • have a spinal cord injury for less than 36 months.
  • have a neurological level of injury between C4-C8
  • have one of the following ASIA impairment scale (AIS):
  • AIS A: complete; no feeling or movement below the injury
  • AIS B: incomplete; have some feeling, but no movement, below the injury
  • Stable ASIA scores with no evidence of functional improvement in motor or sensory examination for at least 3 months.
  • pass criteria assessing the viability of the target (paralyzed) muscle and the donor nerve
  • be between the ages of 18-65 years.
  • have undergone at least 3 months of non-operative rehab therapy.
