Vibration for Muscle Spasms After Spinal Cord Injury

About this trial

This trial is enrolling 198 individuals with chronic spinal cord injuries to test the effect of tendon vibration on spasticity. If included, participants will be given a wearable device that 1) records leg muscle activity and 2) delivers vibration to the leg tendons. The researchers will cause spasms in the paralyzed leg muscles in the seated and reclined positions, to test if the device can reduce spasms by applying vibrations after a spasm is detected. Then, participants will wear the device for 3 days during which muscle activity will be recorded. Vibration will be applied only on day 2. Investigators want to see if closed-loop tendon vibration alters muscle spasms by treating spasms as they occur. Final testing of muscle spasms will be performed after 4 weeks.

    have precision grip with both hands
    be able to ambulate a few steps with or without an assistive device
    not have had a history of head injury or stroke

    -The researchers will cause spasms in the paralyzed leg muscles in the seated and reclined positions, and apply vibrations after a spasm is detected. The participants will wear EMG/vibration device for 3 days during which muscle activity will be recorded and vibration will be applied only on day 2.
